Some prominent landmarks of Paris for a visitor’s pleasure

The monuments in Paris are towering, graceful and majestic and real treat to a visitor who is traveling to France. However to number of monuments in Paris, one there can be added to a huge list of places to be visited there and some of the major monuments and buildings in Paris have been briefed here:

•   Arc de Triomphe: This is a 50 meter high monument located at the center of the Place de l’Étoile, commemorating the victories of France in wars and in respect of people who sacrificed their life for the cause of France. It is situated at the western corner of the Champs- Élysées. This arch pays honors to the war soldier who fought during the era of Napoleonic Wars. The building was developed by Jean Chalgrin in 1806. It is the second largest triumphal arch in existence and was inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus.

•   The Conciergerie: It is an earlier royal palace and prison in Paris, France situated on the west of the Île de la Cité, near the Cathedral of Notre-Dame. It is part of the larger complex which is being known as the Palais de Justice and is still used for judicious purposes and tasks. During the French Revolution hundred of prisoners were being taken from La Conciergerie to be executed on the guillotine at a number of locations around Paris.

•    The Eiffel Tower: As old as going back to 1889 it is an iconic tower situated on the Champ de Mars in Paris and established itself as global icon of France and one of the renowned structures around the world. It is the tallest building in the Paris and is named after its designer engineer Gustave Eiffel it was constructed as an entrance Arch for 1889 World’s Fair. Its entire height is around 324 meter that is about 1,063 feet tall. For a visitor tower has three levels.

Les Invalides: This entire complex is devoted to museums and monuments as related to military history of France.  It is situated at 7th arrondissement of Paris. Among the museums housed in the complex the prominent ones are Musée de l’Armée, the military museum of the Army of France, the Musée des Plans-Reliefs, and the Musée d’Histoire Contemporaine. It is also burial site of some of the legendary France war heroes, especially, the Napoleon Bonaparte.

The Louvre: The museum situated at the Lovre Palace that started in construction as fortress under Philip II is one of the world’s largest and most visited museums.  It is a central landmark of Paris, France and is situated on the Right Bank of the Seine in the 1st arrondissement (district). The museum was inaugurated on 10 August 1793 with an exhibition of 537 paintings. Entire collection of Museum is divided into eight curatorial departments: Egyptian Antiquities; Near Eastern Antiquities; Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiquities; Islamic Art; Sculpture; Decorative Arts; Paintings; Prints and Drawings.

•    Musee d’Orsay: This is a museum situated at Paris, France at the left bank of the river Seine enclosed in an abandoned railway station.  In the museum collection of French art pieces dating from 1848 to 1915 are kept that consisted of pieces like paintings, sculptures, furniture and photography. It is better admired for its collection of  impressionist and post-impressionist masterpieces by painters as
Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, Seurat, Gauguin and Van Gogh.

•    Montmartre: It is an old district of Paris on a hill containing the Basilica of the Sacré Cœur and the Place du Tertre. It is 130 meters high. Apart from Basilica, it has massive reputation being as night club district. There many artists have studios or they worked around the community of Montmartre like as Salvador Dalí, Amedeo Modigliani, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh. It is connected to by metro line 2 stations of Anvers, Pigalle and Blanche and the line 12 stations of Pigalle, Abbesses, Lamarck – Caulaincourt and Jules Joffrin.

•    Notre Dame de Paris (Cathedral of Notre Dame): It is a Gothic Roman Catholic Roman cathedral situated on the eastern half of the Île de la Cité in the fourth arrondissement of Paris, France. It has reputation of being one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in France and in Europe. It was among the first buildings in the world that have employed flying buttress the arched exterior supports in architecture of the building.

•    The Panthéon: It is a building situated at Latin Quarter in Paris and keeps remains of the distinguished French citizens and personalities. This building showcases an example of neoclassicism based on the Pantheon in Rome. Located in the 5th arrondissement on the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, the Panthéon looks out over all of Paris.
